How can we rethink the retirement home?
We live in a highly connected society yet loneliness and social isolation is at an all time high. This is especially common among the elderly, looking for both community and identity. Typical retirement homes can often exasperate these issues through institutional styled design thinking that promotes sterility and detachment.
Second Innings provided a unique opportunity to study the way in which a socially active, diverse and sustainable approach can be taken in the development of a new living model that improves the lives of its inhabitants.
The Micro Village creates a sense of intimacy and familiarity between neighbours, while allowing for sufficient density to provide a truly vibrant community.
The community becomes an active ecosystem with a library, restaurants, craft + culture center and healthcare center providing a potential interface between the residents and broader community it is placed in. Second Innings becomes a true village within a village.
